1. Proper Disposal of Fluorescent Bulbs
IWMC would like to remind customers that while fluorescent lights use less energy and last longer, the full environmental benefits can only be realized when they are SAFELY and properly disposed of after use. Fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, therefore it is very important that correct practices are used to prevent environmental contamination. Do not put broken or used fluorescent bulbs in your waste stream…they are considered hazardous waste.
Examples of bulbs that contain mercury are:
- 8’ or 4’ linear fluorescent bulbs
- compact fluorescent bulbs
- U-tubes and circular bulbs
- Linear fluorescent bulbs such as tanning bulbs, grow bulbs, black lights, etc.
- High Intensity Discharge bulbs used for street lights, flood lights, and car headlights.
Homeowners may take used and broken bulbs to a Waste Watch Drop-Off Centre to be disposed of. There is no charge for disposal.
Businesses may purchase an approved lamp crusher for self disposal, or contact Superior Sanitation or a certified Hazardous Waste Carrier for service.
For information on how to safely clean small mercury spills from a broken fluorescent bulb, please visit either IWMC’s or the Department of Energy, Environment and Forestry’s website or contact Customer Service at 1-888-280-8111 or info@iwmc.pe.ca

2. ESD RCE
The United Nations University’s institute of advanced studies has an ESD program which promotes Regional Centers of Expertise (RCE). These are networks of existing formal, non-formal and informal education organizations mobilized to deliver ESD to a regional community.
While the application deadline for this year’s RCE proposals is coming to pass, we are interested in looking at the feasibility of having an RCE on PEI sometime in the future.
