1.   The 2010 Atlantic Summer Institute has been announced for August 17-20 at UPEI.   This year’s institute’s theme is “Innovation and Collaboration:  Building Resilient Communitites.  This institute will be exploring a number of themes consistent with UNESCO’s ESD themes such as environmental sustainability, health promotion, and social/economic development.  To register go to www.upei.ca/asi or contact asi@thequaich.pe.ca

2. The 2010 Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication is having a national conference from May 19-22 at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia.  The theme of this conference is “Diversity, sustainability, and environment:  Exploring cultural and practical diversity for environmental learning.”  There are a number of extremely prominent speakers presenting including Ahmed Djoghlaf, the executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity at the United Nations Environment Program.  For more information on the conference please visit http://www.educ.sfu.ca/eecom2010/index.html

3. The World Sustainable Development Teach-In day is being held on Friday, December 3rd, 2010.  This teach-in day will take place entirely online (and it is available to any interested parties) and will consist of a series of 50 lectures delivered in English by the world’s premier experts on sustainable development, an assortment of videos on the scientific, economic, and social aspects of sustainable development and a discussion forum.  To participate you can register on the website for free: www.world-sustainability-day.net

5. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ROADSIDE CLEANUP

 

Schools, businesses, families and individuals are encouraged to help keep PEI beautiful by participating in the annual Women’s Institute Roadside Cleanup on or before Saturday, May 15th.  Participants can obtain litter collection bags at Access PEI sites, IWMC Facilities, Stratford and Cornwall Town Offices, Kensington Potato Services, or the Charlottetown Agricultural Research Station.  Bags containing collected litter can simply be placed on the side of the road for collection by the Transportation of Public Works beginning Monday, May 17th.

 

NEW TO THE WASTE WATCH BLUE BAG PROGRAM

 

Effective immediately electrical / extension cords may be placed into Blue Bag # 2 along with plastics, glass and metals.  Christmas light sets are accepted as well, but if possible, please place any removable lights into the waste cart prior to putting the cord into the blue bag.

 

SPRING CLEANUP

 

The annual Spring Cleanup Campaign is underway with this week being an Island-wide compost week collection.  Please ensure bulk waste items (within guidelines) are curbside by Monday, May 10th, and any additional yard and garden material in paper bags and by the curb by Monday, May 17th.  There is no METAL collection during Cleanup this year as household metals are now collected monthly through the Blue Bag Program.
