1. Resources for Rethinking (R4R)
Exemplary sustainability resources reviewed by teachers for teachers. Resources for Rethinking (R4R) provides teachers access to materials that integrate ecological, social and economic spheres through active, relevant, interdisciplinary learning. We call this learning Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
ESD promotes respect for universal human rights, cultural diversity, greater care of life and the protection of Earth’s ecosystems, and a commitment to build a global culture of tolerance and peace.

2. Living a Healthy Life
Living a Healthy Life is a fun and practical program that helps people with ongoing health conditions overcome daily challenges and maintain active, fulfilling lives. Throughout the program, people develop the skills they need to help themselves. They gain confidence and motivation to manage their health, and feel more positive about their lives.
This is a six week program with sessions held once a week for 2 ½ hours. There is a maximum of 18 people per session. It is led by two peer leaders; many also have ongoing health problems. The program is open to people with any type of ongoing health condition (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, arthritis, heart disease, asthma, etc.), as well as to caregivers and loved ones.
The program looks at ways to manage symptoms; make daily tasks easier; get started with healthy eating and exercises; better manage difficult emotions like fear, anger and frustration; and communicate well with family, friends, doctors and other health care providers.
It was developed by Stanford University Patient Research Centre and is being used by countries around the world. It has been available in British Columbia, Yukon, Alberta and Saskatchewan for several years and will now be offered in Atlantic Provinces, including Prince Edward Island through the Primary Care Division of the Department of Health. The program was piloted in PEI at several sites during the fall 2008/winter 2009 to a very positive response.
Programs will be held in various community sites across the province and will be available in both English and French. The program costs $10 and participants receive a copy of the book: Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.
Currently there are two programs tentatively scheduled to begin in January - one through the PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation in Charlottetown beginning January 11 and the other at the Parkview Seniors Club in Summerside beginning January 14.
People can register for the program by calling 1-888-854-7244 (toll free).
